Prep School Life

Life in the Prep School is busy, exciting and always full of surprises.

Life in the Prep School is busy, and throughout the week our pupils take part in sport, music, art, drama and extra-curricular
activities in addition to their academic work. They also join one Spratton’s four school
houses for some good-natured inter-house competition.

The School Day

Breakfast Club

The School day can begin as early as 7.45am when children in the Prep School can come to the dining room on their own for a cooked or continental breakfast. Parents are also welcome to attend and the cost will be added to the end of term bill.

A Typical Day

The Prep school day typically starts at 8.30am and finishes at 4.00pm, with Games taking place on two afternoons per week. Prep and after school activities begin at 4.20pm and finish at 5.20pm when children can be collected. There is then later supervision for Prep School pupils who need to stay until 6.00pm.

Prep

Should any pupils wish to stay at school and quietly do their homework in the school library, then Prep is available from 4.20pm to 5.20pm every day. There is no need to book and they can just turn up on the day.

Year Groups

Year 3

Year 3 is predominantly taught in its own designated teaching block, although they still use specialist rooms and receive specialist teachers for certain subjects. This allows for a gentle transition from the Pre-Prep as each form is taught by its form tutor, thus providing the pupils with a stable learning environment.

Years 4-6

In Years 4 to Year 6 pupils are gradually introduced to a wider range of subjects, specialist rooms and teachers. They are expected to develop good organisational skills and they are prepared to a high standard for their move into the senior part of the school.

Years 7-8

Years 7 and 8 sees the focus firmly switch to 13+ Common Entrance exams and Scholarships at the end of Year 8, to allow entry for pupils into their chosen senior schools. This rigorous academic course provides a very sound footing in all core subjects, and is something from which they can build on as they move into their next school.

School Houses

Every pupil joins one of the four school houses, when they enter the Prep School. They then get to represent their house in friendly inter-house competitions, quizzes and matches, where they can earn points that go towards the house cup. They will also have weekly assemblies where any pupil achievements are recognised and celebrated by their House.

School Council

Pupils at Spratton Hall have every opportunity to be heard and they are fully involved in the process of developing the school. Every pupil has the opportunity to represent their Form on the School Council which meets on a weekly basis with the Head of Pastoral Care.

The School Council helps to ensure that pupils have:

  • A safe, happy and fair learning environment
  • A forum to voice their concerns and act upon them
  • An opportunity to take an active part in the management of the school
  • Experience of the democratic process

The School Council encourages pupils to develop:

  • A sense of ownership over policy and practice
  • A consensus over school issues, such as behaviour
  • Responsibility towards the school community and environment
  • An understanding of appropriate behaviour in different situation

Tutors

All pupils in the Prep School have a Tutor who is responsible for the academic and pastoral welfare of those in their care. To begin with this will usually be the person who teaches them most often. The Tutor is the first point of contact for pupils and their parents, and is key in the relationship between pupil, parent and school. Tutors monitor and sign pupil diaries on a daily basis providing a regular and important line of contact with parents.

What Form Tutors Do:

  • Meet with their tutees twice daily for Form Registration and general organisation in readiness for school
  • Work closely with their tutees to monitor academic grades and these will be discussed with tutees, identifying strengths and areas for development
  • Keep a record of pupils’ progress
  • Meet with their tutees for an extended Tutorial period for half an hour a week
  • Assist his/her tutees in setting targets for their social and academic development
  • Meet with their form for one P.S.H.C.E. period each week
  • Have regular meetings with their Head of Year so that any issues can be raised and discussed
