Throughout their creative journey at Spratton, pupils have the opportunity to experience various art skills and processes. Each year all year groups cover observational drawing, painting, ceramics, and printing, some also get to do textiles, building their confidence to express and communicate. In Years 6, 7 and 8 pupils extend their creativity through more sustained activities, some of which will be selected for the scholarship programme. They will become more independent in using visual language to communicate their own ideas, feelings and meanings.
The art studios provide a light and stimulating space for all forms of artistic creativity. In addition to the two timetabled art lessons, pupils can access the art rooms for independent learning and school art projects during lunch times and there are two after school Art Clubs.
At Spratton, we are proud of our sketchbooks, they are used for recording art experiences and imagination, first-hand observational drawing, artist information and developing ideas towards building a personal portfolio.
There are three art trips to galleries and museums each year. This year, Year 8 visit the National Portrait Gallery, Year 6 visits the world famous Pre-Raphaelite collection in Birmingham City Art Gallery and Year 4 visit Burghley House.
Pupils regularly take part in and win a variety of national and prep school competitions such as the Prep School Art Exhibition at Stowe.
It is always busy in the Art Department with canvases on easels, larger structures being made and wired and wonderful outfits with masks for the very popular Year 8 Fashion Show. Also plates, heads and pots in various stages of ceramic production, a height of activity, just the way we like it!
