Year 7 Class Readers

The Year 7 sets are each reading a different novel but all support the Common Entrance theme: 'Conflict'.

Mrs Roberts' Set: Michael Morpurgo's Private Peaceful
From those terrible World War One battlefields Tommo Peaceful is recalling his childhood. He remembers his big brother Charlie taking him to his first day of school, the death of his father, his mum working hard to keep a roof over their heads and food on their table. He recalls the only girl in his life, Molly, and how Charlie somehow took her away from him. But as the World turned to War, he had to grow up fast. Together Charlie and Tommo enlist and are sent to France to what could only be described as pure hell on Earth. Bullets, bombs, death. Shells, noise, dirt. Disease, rats, stench. Charlie and Tommo fight for their lives and desperately try to stay together.

Mr Clarke's Set: Louis Sachar's Holes
Stanley Yelnats' family has a history of bad luck stretching back to his 'dirty-rotten-no-good-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather', so he isn't too surprised when a miscarriage of justice sends him to a boys' juvenile detention centre. At Camp Green Lake the boys must dig a hole a day, five feet deep, five feet across, in the dried up lake bed. The warden claims the labour is character building, but it is a lie. Stanley must dig up the truth.
