Reception

Reception is Spratton Hall’s entry year where our youngest children take their first steps into the world of education. The classrooms are bright and stimulating and the teachers highly-trained and incredibly supportive.

Getting to know your child before they start at Spratton Hall is essential and we communicate closely with pre-schools and nurseries so that we understand what interests your child, what stimulates their curiosity and captures their imagination.

In the summer term, before they start Reception, we offer five acclimatisation sessions to enable the children to meet their teachers, classmates and spend some time in their classrooms enjoying stories and activities. There is also a Teddy Bear’s picnic in the Summer Term, where Reception children and their parents can meet and play together before the Summer holidays.

Curriculum

In Reception, the children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, which has seven areas of learning. Children are taught in whole class, small group and as individuals as appropriate. Adult-led group activities, one to one sessions and independent challenges are set daily so that children can work with others in different sized groups as well as developing independence in fulfilling a challenge on their own. There are also daily opportunities for child-initiated activities during Independent Learning time.

Teaching Staff

Each class has a full time highly-qualified Early Years Teacher and a Teaching Assistant. Additionally, the Reception children are also taught by skilled, specialist tutors for Music, Technology, P.E and Dance.

The three prime areas of learning are:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The four specific areas, through which the prime areas are strengthened and applied, are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Reception Classrooms

Nestled in the heart of the school, our bright, cheerful Reception classrooms feature, role play and workshop areas, interactive whiteboards, computers, that flow freely into their own secure outdoor areas. During lesson time, the Pre-Prep children can also use the Theatre, Forest School and explore our 50 acres of grounds.

Physical Education

The children have twice weekly PE lessons either in the Sports Dome or on the Playing Fields. All pupils in our Reception and Year 1 classes receive one timetabled Dance lesson each week taught in our theatre, the Hunter Hall, by a specialist dance tutor.

Learning with Technology

Our Reception children benefit from two Computing lessons every week, taught by a specialist tutor. Here they learn computer mouse and keyboard skills and are introduced to a range of age appropriate programs, such as Purple Mash and Numbots, to help them communicate their ideas and thoughts on screen. Using iPads and programmable toys in addition, the children are taught to recognise technology in the wider world and to understand the importance of e-safety.
