Life in Year 8
The final year at Spratton is a special one that will live long in the memory of our pupils once they have left us.
Year 8 pupils are given areas of responsibility, whether this is Head Boy or Head Girl, House Captains, Heads of Music, Captains of Sport or organising particular aspects of their House. These responsibilities mean that the children leave us as confident, well-rounded individuals, fully prepared for life before joining their chosen senior schools.
Our Year 8 pupils also select a charity for which they raise awareness during the year. The children organise fundraising events themselves, thus learning important life skills. Such events have included a sponsored mountain climb, bike rides, home clothes days, cake sales, and running stalls at various school events. Not only does this teach the children important life skills, but it opens their eyes to others who may be less fortunate than ourselves
As well as reaching the pinnacle of the school, in the first few weeks of the year the Head Master and his wife host a very special dinner for Year 8, where they are treated to a three-course meal and get to visit parts of the school they have never seen before.
They also attend trips to the site of the Battle of Bosworth and to the National Portrait Gallery and spend time away with their teams ‘on tour’ in such places as Oxford and York for hockey, rugby, cricket, netball or rounders.
They have a wonderful ski trip to look forward to, a week in Pila, Italy. Then, once their Common Entrance Exams are completed, they have a splendid post Common Entrance programme, including a special Head Master’s treat as he takes them to London visiting various well-known sites and taking in a show in the evening.
They then have a ‘Special Activity Week’ with a variety of visiting speakers, with activities such as ballroom dancing, special challenge days, Fashion Show, Cinema Experience, Tours, educational workshops, quizzes, and charity presentations. In addition, two professional actors from ‘The Young Shakespeare Company’ spend a week with them putting on a Shakespeare play in just a few days. This is always a wonderful experience for the children and they never fail to put on a fantastic show.
The following week, the children to go ‘Outward Bound’ in the Lake District where they have the chance to enjoy each other’s company, while taking part in team building exercises, water sports and evenings spent socialising together or camping outside on the slopes of a mountain.
Their time at Spratton culminates with the very special ‘Speech Day’ held in the marquee on the top fields and attended by over 800 people, where the Year 8s receive their prizes and, of course, the highlight of the day – the Head Boy and Head Girl Speech!
That evening is the magical and very special “Leavers’ Ball”, again held in the marquee, a quite wonderful way for the children to end their time at Spratton and leave us with many wonderful memories.
Finally, Year 8 are invited back to Spratton for a special ‘tea’ in October half-term, where they are presented with their personalised Yearbooks, a rather splendid memento of the time they had at Spratton. This is always a lovely occasion when the children are back together again and have the opportunity to re-live some wonderful memories.
