Art

Throughout their creative journey at Spratton Hall, pupils have the opportunity to develop a huge range of art skills and processes. Every year group covers observational drawing, painting, card design, printing or textiles, and ceramics. The children build on the skills they learn each year, developing the confidence to express and communicate their own visions through their favourite medium to make their own miniature masterpieces.

The Art Studios

The main studio is a light and stimulating space crammed with the creative chaos of canvases propped on easels, larger projects in production as well as plates, heads and pots in various stages of completion – just the way we like it! As every year group does ceramics, we also have a separate ceramics studio and kiln adjacent to our main art studio.

Senior Students and Scholarships

In Years 6, 7 and 8 pupils extend their creativity through more sustained activities, some of which will be selected for the scholarship programme. They will become more independent in using visual language to communicate their own ideas, feelings and meanings.

Extra Art

In addition to the two timetabled art lessons each week, pupils can access the art rooms for independent learning and school art projects, either during their lunch break or in one of the three after school Art Clubs.

Materials

The studios are stocked with any materials that the pupils need for their projects and we also focus strongly on re-using, re-cycling and upcycling materials to breathe new life into them. All pupils get a hardback sketch which they use for researching and developing ideas, artist information, first-hand observational drawing, recording each project from start to finish, and developing ideas towards building a personal portfolio.

Art Trips and Events

There are up to three trips a year to various galleries and collections, including The National Portrait Gallery, Birmingham Museum and Burghley House for artistic inspiration. The Art Department also supports school productions and events with costumes, props and scenery, as well as enabling the Year 8 pupils to put on their much-loved annual fashion show where they create and model some amazing handmade outfits!
