FROM THE HEAD MASTER

It has been a most pleasing start to the new term and, indeed, to 2023.  It was lovely to see the children arrive back in school on Monday looking re-energised for the term ahead.

Old Sprattonian Success

I do from time to time share success stories of our past pupils.  I was delighted to hear that Izzy Jessop, currently in her final year at Oundle, has been offered a place at Somerville College, Oxford to read Classics and French.  Many congratulations to Izzy on this super achievement, an educational journey that began in a green blazer just a few years ago.

Discovery Day

Parents may have seen on our social media pages that we are having a Pre-Prep Discovery Day on Friday 27th January.  This is to give the opportunity to welcome any pre-school age children and their parents to the school to spend a little bit of time in our Reception classrooms having fun and discovering more about Spratton and starting school.

If you have younger children who you think would enjoy the afternoon or, indeed, know of any other families with pre-school age children who would like to come along, please do pass the message on to them.  Booking a slot should be done via our website or through Mrs Sarah Church, our Registrar.

Highgate House

I have little to update you on following my mention of Highgate House in my start of term letter last week.  I have been asked, however, to let you know that there are means for interested parties to share their opinions on the plans.  This can be done through our local MP, Chris Heaton-Harris’ own website using this link:  Chris Heaton-Harris/Highgate House Views.

You can also learn more about the plans on the Creaton Parish Council website using this link:  Creaton.

Thank you

Simon Clarke

PRE-PREP

Happy New Year!

You could sense a fizzy energy in the air as we all came together again for the start of the Spring term. The grey, bitterly cold January morning that we’d all experienced soon faded into the background, as the children eagerly described new toys and gadgets, waggled their tongues through fresh gaps in teeth and shared their tales of family outings and visitors.

Spring Term Topics

There were a few ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ as the children entered into their classrooms. Many new displays and imaginative role-play areas have popped up, carefully designed to ignite the children’s interest in their new topics and promote plenty of questions. In Reception, there is an eclectic mix of toys, both old and new, such as teddy bears, programmable robots and wooden construction kits with many more making an appearance as their new topic ‘Toys’ unfolds.

Year 1 are venturing into the historic world of ‘The Egyptians’. Noticing a large, gold-topped pyramid, shadowed by a swaying palm tree and numerous images of ornate pharaohs, one parent declared, ‘It’s looking more like Egypt in here every day. I wouldn’t be surprised if we turned up and discovered a camel tomorrow!”

Up the stairs or across the playground to Year 2, there is much excitement surrounding their new topic of ‘Chocolate’. Taking a deep dive into Mayan culture this week, the children created an array of spirit animal masks, which the Mayans believed would bring great protection in times of battle. To complement their topic, I know the children (and staff!) are really looking forward to visiting a chocolate factory at the end of this month.

Spring Term Calendar Events

There are numerous exciting events to look forward to this term, including year group trips and assemblies, World Book Day, Rock Your Socks Day and, of course, our very special and heart-warming ‘mothering’ themed assembly in March. Further information, if needed, will be sent out in advance, but it is worth keeping an eye on the calendar link at the bottom of this newsletter, to ensure that you have all the relevant dates in your diary.

Numbots

If you have encountered conversations about Rusty the Robot and his friends Unicorn-bot, Kitty-bot and Ninja-bot, from your Reception child, this is because they now have their very own logins to Numbots, to which every Pre-Prep child is subscribed to. Numbots is a fun, user-friendly computer program which immerses the children in opportunities to enrich their number skills. From place value, subitising, counting and ordering, to more complex addition and subtraction, the program develops children’s ability to understand and recall important number facts at speed. Screen time on devices is always something that needs to be managed carefully. However, regular, short bursts of activity on educational programs can prove valuable – all the children’s login details can be found on the back of their reading record books.

Pre-Prep Pupil Achievements

Many congratulations to the following children who have successfully gained their next grading in martial arts – Jeevan Soomal (2A) red belt, Rudy Boswell (1S) red belt, Daya Soomal (RG) white belt with red stripe and Cole Purcell (1S) white belt with green stripe.

Very well done to Sybil Bromwich (2M) for achieving a Bronze award for her skills in Tennis.

Congratulations to Clara Kecker (1S) for achieving her Level 2 Swimming Award.

‘OH YES WE ARE!’

Mr Bradnam and Ms Bianco are appearing in Rugby Theatre’s pantomime ‘Snow White and the Seven Ninjas’, from Friday 20th January until Sunday 29th January.

The show is a traditional family panto, with Mr Bradnam appearing as Dame Wibble Wobble and Ms Bianco as a Narrator.  It is a great cast with plenty of songs, slapstick and humour to come and enjoy in the New Year. If you are interested in tickets, they are £14 for adults, cheaper for children, with family tickets available. If you want to come and join in the fun, tickets are available from the box office: 01788 541234 or box.office@rugbytheatre.co.uk.

NATIONAL ONLINE SAFETY GUIDES

We would like to make parents aware of the National Online Safety website which provides weekly guidance for parents on the platforms and websites used by children, together with hints and tips for internet safety.  These guides give parents knowledge about a number of issues including age-appropriate content, sharing location, visible personal data, scammers and trolling etc.  Parents can also follow them on social media which enables their weekly ‘Wake Up Wednesday’ campaign containing these guides, to pop up on their feed.
