FROM THE HEADMASTER

Scholarship Success
I am delighted to announce that Lilly Brook has been awarded both an Art and a Thring (All-Rounder) Scholarship to Uppingham, Emily Moger has been awarded a Drama Scholarship to Uppingham and Bella Smith an Art Exhibition to Oundle.  These are super achievements from all three pupils and reward for their hard work and talents – many congratulations to them indeed.

This brings to a close the scholarship season for this year and while we always celebrate the achievements of those children who have achieved a scholarship, I want to pay tribute to those who have entered for a scholarship and have been unsuccessful.  I hope those children do remember that going in for a scholarship is a tremendous accolade in itself and, I hope, a beneficial experience to go through. We are just as proud of them as we are of those who have been awarded a scholarship.

Beauty and the Beast
What a show!  Enormous congratulations to the cast for this week’s run – they were outstanding.  Thank you so much to them, the backstage crew and all those involved.  Putting on a production of that size and complexity is such a long and challenging process and has been part of their lives for six months – and then it is over in a flash.  Very well done to Mrs King and Mr Williams and the entire team for such a successful show.  Somehow, they do keep churning out these successes year on year!

Maidwell Chase
I enjoyed popping over to Maidwell for their last ever ‘Chase’ event last week and seeing our teams do so well.  Particular congratulations to our Years 3 and 4 Girls team and the Years 7 and 8 Girls team who romped home in 1st place in their respective race.  Very well done to Mara Hamilton and Isla Allsopp who came home in first place in their races. This successful end to the cross-country seasons sums up what a fantastic season it has been.  Well done to Mrs Chudley and Mr White and their fine band of runners. Please see the full results below.

Maths Competition
It was most remiss of me not to mention in last week’s newsletter how well our pupils did in the Year 3 Maths Competition held at Laxton School two weeks ago.  Well done to our team of Ethan Lane, Rudy Boswell and particularly well done to Clara Kecker and Bertie Brady-White who won the competition for Spratton.

Stowe Rugby Success
I was delighted to hear last week that Stowe won the U16 National Schools Cup with a nail-biting 25-21 win over Northampton School for Boys, in an all-local final. Three of our former pupils, Oliver Jones, Jacques Fraser-Allen and Benji Pegg, were in the Stowe team and should be proud of their achievements.

Morning Minibus – Summer Term
Owing to demand, we are putting on an additional Market Harborough morning minibus next term. If you had heard that the routes were full but are now interested, please do contact Mrs Gallo here to book a place.

End of Term
I will update you in my usual start of term letter in April about our pastoral and new staff appointments for September. I will also give you an update in that letter on the building development which is so exciting now that we are very much on the home straight.  We look forward to eating in our new dining room in the second half of next term from June!

It is hard to believe we have reached the end of this term – another extremely busy and hugely successful term for the pupils who are to be congratulated on all they have achieved. I wish you all a very happy holiday and, if you are travelling, safe journeys.

PRE-PREP

Year 2 – Giggles, Gales and a Very Wet Lesson!
Whilst our beautiful spring weather is becoming warmer and brighter, it was a cold, blustery experience outside for the children of 2W recently. Having studied the freezing Antarctic conditions within their ‘Pole to Pole’ topic, the children set about exploring how inadequate Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s clothing was in protecting him from the cold. Brave volunteers stepped up and braced themselves as cold water and a strong wind (Miss Morrow’s hairdryer!) were directed at them. I’m not sure the Antarctic explorers of the time giggled and roared with laughter as much as the soaking wet children did!

Celebrating the Persian New Year
The children of 2M recently welcomed Jasmine’s mummy into their classroom, to share with them some of the many traditions of the Persian New Year. This ancient festival, which dates back over 3000 years, celebrates renewal and happiness at the start of spring. To help commemorate this, the children were each gifted an egg to decorate and some tasty treats to take home and eat. Thank you so much to Jasmine’s mummy for sharing her knowledge and insights with the children in such a fun and meaningful way.

Easter Fun Run – Bunnies and Big Smiles!
Wednesday afternoon, blessed with warm sunshine, the whole school decked themselves in bunny ears and took to the fields for an Easter Fun Run. The Year 8 pupils paired up with younger children from the Pre-Prep, guiding them around the course with enthusiasm and encouragement. It was a heart-warming sight—ears bouncing, faces glowing, and the joy of teamwork on full display. To top off the experience, everyone was rewarded with a chocolate bunny treat at the finishing line, making for a wonderful afternoon enjoyed by all.

Pre-Prep Thankfulness Assembly
On Thursday afternoon, an array of much-loved guests took their seats in the Hunter Hall for a truly special assembly. Our Thankfulness Assembly was a chance for the children to reflect on the importance of family and to tell their grown-ups just how wonderful they are.

“You are the smell of Christmas morning,” declared one child, while another playfully shared, “You are the hot mustard in my dinnertime hot dog!” With touching songs, poems, and artwork, the afternoon was filled with warmth and appreciation – smiles were shared, a few eyes glistened and some wonderful memories were made to treasure.

Finally, I would like to wish everyone a relaxing and fun-filled Easter break. I look forward to hearing all about the children’s holiday adventures when they return, rested and full of enthusiasm, ready for an exciting final term.

SPORTS NEWS

Maidwell Chase 2025
We took 42 pupils to the final Maidwell Chase—a fantastic event that will be greatly missed. It was a blustery day, which added to the challenging distance, making for tough races, but all battled hard and should be very proud of their performances.

The Boys
Overall, the boys gave a great account of themselves but faced stiff competition in a very tough field. Congratulations to Joe Barber for leading the U13s home in 6th place, George Docker for finishing as the first U11 in 7th place, and Rory Waite for leading the U9s in in 5th place, who finished 3rd place as a team.

The Girls
Mara Hamilton had another outstanding race, securing an individual winner’s medal as she led the U11s over the line. Unfortunately, the team just missed out on a podium finish.

The U9s built on their victory from two weeks ago, with Alicia Szechenyi finishing as our first runner home in 2nd place. She was closely followed by Florence Van Herrewege, Lexi Mercer, Sophia Hodgkins, and Octavia Podesta all finishing in the top six—resulting in a clear team win!

Finally, the U13 girls delivered another exceptional performance. Isla Allsopp secured another race victory, leading the team home, with Isabella Szechenyi finishing just behind in 2nd place. Completing the top four were India Woollcott-Price and Bessie Sanders, finishing in 7th and 10th place respectively. This dominant performance ensured that the U13 girls won the team competition as well!

A huge congratulations to all the runners who took part, as well as those who have shown commitment in training and determination in races throughout the last two terms.

SCHOOL NEWS

Laxton Junior School Maths Competition
On Thursday 13th March, following on from a difficult selection test, our four successful Year 3 pupils went to Laxton Junior School to compete in their annual maths competition. The Spratton team of Bertie, Clara, Ethan, and Rudy, were competing against 10 other schools in six fiendishly tricky maths challenges.

The tasks tested different areas including problem-solving, logical thinking, and pure calculation. According to Mr White and Miss Collins, the questions were indeed VERY hard!

After splitting into pairs, Ethan and Rudy performed brilliantly throughout the day to secure a 4th place finish. Clara and Bertie also excelled, coming away with a very impressive 1st place, winning the entire competition!
