Getting the Basics Right
Right from the start of their school journey, the teachers ensure that every child understands and can effectively use the basic building blocks of Maths such as number bonds, place value and times tables. This begins in Pre-Prep where they are encouraged to have a hands-on approach to learning, using Numbots to improve their confidence with the four operations and understanding of the number system.
As the pupils get older they are introduced to their times tables through the use of a fun application called Times Tables Rockstars which form part of the weekly Maths prep. They will also learn how to calculate mentally, use recognised written methods and solve age appropriate problems.
The Maths Syllabus
The syllabus is largely based on the National Curriculum with topics covering Numbers, Algebra, Shape and Space, Measures, Graphs and Handling Data although some topics are taught ahead of the National Curriculum to allow for bridging the gap to Common Entrance exams.
Setting the Standard
From Year 3 onwards, pupils are put into sets based on ability, pace and confidence. These sets are constantly reviewed and monitored and pupils can move between them accordingly. As their confidence and ability grows individuals and teams can represent Spratton in UK Maths Trust competitions which enables some of the stronger Mathematicians test their skills against other local schools.
STEM
Maths also forms a core part of the science and technology syllabuses and is an integral part of STEM week. The Spratton STEM week is always crammed with entertaining activities including: visits from Zoolab and an Escape Room company, design projects, competitions, puzzles, maths challenges, house science competitions and Big Bang Shows.
Learning Support
Individual help and learning support are available for any pupils that feel like they may need help getting up to speed with their Maths.
